Yorkshire Wolds Way - Nick’s Epic Fundraiser

After running up Snowden a couple of times, walking (and a few years later, running) the Lyke Wake Walk, and then in 2019 running home from Whitby to Dunnington, near York (50 miles), the Revd Canon Nick Bird was looking for a new challenge.

After delaying for a year due to covid, over 23/24 July he walked the Yorkshire Wolds Way from Hessle to Filey, completing the journey in 31 hours. His wife, Diane Benson, walked the first four hours with Nick, and his colleague, The Revd Mark Poole did another three, before being joined by an old friend, Jason Shearer, for the 30 mile night section.

Completing the 79 miles walk, which is a national trail threading itself across beautiful countryside, has been a long-held ambition. Nick says, 'The blisters were all worth it to spend time in beautiful surroundings with friends and family, and to raise some money for a new roof for the St Nicholas Church extension, but please stop me if I ever suggest doing it again'.

Once gift aid has been factored in, Nick has raised over £1000 towards replacing the Tower Room roof at St Nicks - an incredible sum! If you would like to donate, it’s not too late. Please use the dedicated GoldenGiving link to Sponsor Nicks on his fundraising walk or speak to one of the churchwardens.

Nick Bird’s Epic Walk

Revd Nick is taking on another epic (crazy?) challenge.

On Friday 23rd July, at about midday, he plans to leave Hull and walk the Yorkshire Wolds Way continuously to Filey, a total distance of 80 miles.

The purpose is to raise money towards repairing the Tower Room roof at St Nicholas Church, as part of our Building Work Appeal, so that we can continue to host community activities for years to come.

Sponsorship forms are available in the churches, or you can give online using the dedicated GoldenGiving link to Sponsor Nicks on his fundraising walk.

Mark Poole's priesting & First Mass

Revd Mark Poole will be priested at Holy Trinity Church Stockton on the Forest on Saturday 3 July, 3pm.

If you have been allocated a seat in the church for the ordination service, you are also invited to join Mark and his family in Stockton village hall after the service. In order to comply with regulations on numbers, only people with a seat in church are expected in the village hall. Sorry for any disappointment this may cause.

Any food which you are kindly contributing to the Buffet tea should be dropped off at the hall between 12 and 1pm on Saturday 3rd July. As from Monday 21st June, all church places are taken.

Please pray for Mark and all who are being ordained this weekend.

Mark will be presiding at his first communion on Sunday 4th July in Stockton at 10.30am. There will also be services in Warthill and Dunnington that morning, but people are welcome to come to Stockton so long as they book with Ennis (ennisjacksonuk@yahoo.co.uk or 400364).

Churchyard Wildlife Count

Saturday 12 June

10.00am—12:30pm at Holy Trinity, Stockton, and
2.00pm—4.30pm at St Nicholas, Dunnington

Caring for creation is one of the church’s key missions, but how can we do that if we don’t know what we have?

Come and join us in the churchyards of Holy Trinity and St Nicholas and help survey the biodiversity as part of the national 'Churches Count on Nature' initiative.

No specialist skills needed. There will be wildlife experts on hand to help you identify your finds. Additionally, if you can, bring a smart phone with the free 'iRecord' or ‘iNaturalist’ app installed - you’ll be able to get instant expert help with your identification by uploading photos of what you see! Our findings will be added to a national database.

Nature Detective activities will be provided for children, to help everyone of all ages to get involved, and refreshments will be available.

For more information, please email Lisa Horton at horton2517@sky.com or Colin Beale.
