Dunnington NSPCC Committee Closes

Sadly, after over 50 years, the Dunnington NSPCC Volunteer Fundraising Committee is closing.

The committee has been dedicated to raising funds to support the vital work of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. It is the leading children's charity in the UK specialising in child protection and is governed by a Royal Charter first granted by Queen Victoria in 1895.

Unfortunately, as time has gone on, we have not been successful in recruiting enough new members to our committee to replace those that have passed away or are no longer able to be active.

Over the years the committee has put on a variety of events such as Hidden Gardens, brass band concerts and talks and we have always appreciated the amazing support that we have received.

Businesses have displayed our posters. The Newsagents have also sold our tickets, the Dunnington Reading Room Committee have enabled us to put on events in the village hall and those that work on the Grapevine and the village Facebook page have helped us by advertising our functions.

Members of the public have assisted us in a range of ways including giving donations, opening their gardens, attending our events, and helping with refreshments or to set up and clear away.

Thank you to all of you that have helped us. All monies raised from our events went directly to the NSPCC and your contributions enabled them to be there to help vulnerable children at a time of need.

I would also like to publicly thank the committee members past and present who have dedicated their time and effort to put on events and raise funds to support the charity’s important work.

Unfortunately, the need for the NSPCC is still there. During lockdown, 50 children a day turned to Childline after suffering abuse and neglect.

Although the Dunnington committee is closing there are various national fundraising initiatives. Anyone wishing to find out more about the NSPCC or continue to support this national charity can do so by going online at: https://www.nspcc.org.uk

On this site you can also:

  • Get a letter from Santa
  • Buy Christmas cards and gifts
  • Enter the Christmas Raffle 2020
  • Shop with Amazon Smile

Our Local Fundraising Manager Jackie Dawson would also be happy to hear from you if you wished to contact her at: Jackie.Dawson@NSPCC.org.uk

I hope you all stay safe and well.

Derwent Lions Rocking Rudolph

After giving the matter much consideration, we have decided that Rocking Rudolph will not be visiting the villages this year collecting money for good causes. Ethically, given the current situation, it does not feel appropriate and this is compounded by the risks of an inability to comply with the Covid Rules on Social Distancing and Rule of 6 , together with safeguarding our volunteers. This will be the first time in at least 30 years years that Rudolph has not been touring the villages in our patch but we trust you will understand the reasons for this.

It may be possible to arrange some small scale visits to schools and Care Homes and we will be contacting these establishments regarding this.

We are also working on some on-line ideas, so please keep up to date by visiting https://derwent.lionsclub.co

If you would like to donate to Derwent Lions so that we can continue to provide financial support to good causes, including local foodbanks, please see our Just Giving  page via the above website. Any donations will be most gratefully received.

Derwent Lions Christmas Tree Recycling raising funds for St Leonards Hospice

Following the success of last years' collections, on Saturday 9th January 2021 Derwent Lions will be recycling Christmas trees in Dunnington.

If you book your collection through our website, we’ll collect your tree from your house, recycle it and save you getting needles all over your car! This year, all proceeds will go to St Leonards Hospice. Like other charities, they have been greatly affected by being unable to host their usual fund-raising activities.

Once you've booked your tree collection online, and in advance of 9/10th January weekend, it would help us if trees could be placed outside to allow our volunteers to collect while complying with social distancing rules.

Our colleagues in “Just Helping” will be emailing people who have used our service last year with further details.

Please see https://derwent.lionsclub.co/ more information. The preferred option for payment is via the web site, but if that’s not for you, contact us via email Derwentlions@gmail.com or ring Lion John on 0345 833 2816.

Derwent Lions are very grateful to all the help Toby Johnson, Tree Surgeon, gives us with this project.

The collection is obviously dependent on Covid regulations at the time allowing us to complete the collection.
