Dunnington Primary School
As a Reception class teacher, I find that every year brings a sense of excitement of new beginnings. For all four year olds ( and their parents) starting 'big' school marks the start of the next phase in children's lives-a fresh adventure with all its challenges, hurdles and rewards. For teachers, they too feel that enormous sense of responsibility to set the scene for each child's education, not only academically , but also socially and emotionally.
Each year, as the new Reception children line up in the playground for the first time, I note the apprehensive expressions on parents' faces, some holding back tears at letting go . Children display a range of emotions, from not wanting to leave a parent, to skipping in happily, barely looking back!
This year has, of course, added an extra dimension of preparation and responsibility, with Covid dominating every routine in schools , as in all places of work. Teachers' concerns of ,'Will we remember every new routine? How will the children manage?' have continued to be at the forefront of our thinking, especially after the preparation of very lengthy risk assessments, documenting minute detail on how we keep our children and staff safe. However, once we all started, it then became a roller coaster ride, but run with military precision! It has been so good to be back, doing the job we all love.
The children have coped brilliantly! Very young children don't really know any differently, of course, but they have never once complained about the endless handwashing. They have entered into everything with enthusiasm and excitement. Bless them all!
So, yes, school is different this year and will continue to be so for quite a while I feel. Yet school is also the same in many ways too. Children are children. Teachers are teachers and learning is learning!

Dunnington in Bloom
This Christmas looks like being the strangest such event that most of can remember, so it’s good to be able to reassure everyone that one festive element at least in our village will be essentially unchanged – our famous display of Christmas trees.
Delivery is expected on Friday 27th November and we thank the Parish Council for arranging that a contractor will put them in place – all being well, on Saturday the 28th. Various members of the Bloom team will be on hand to see that everything fits with our well-established traditions.
Thank you to all have put their backs into all the endless outdoor jobs that mean Dunnington has looked as good as ever all through this difficult year. We look very cautiously forward to the possibility of a better New Year for everyone.

Dunnington WI
Dunnington WI held its Annual Meeting on 3rd November on Zoom, with 23 members attending plus two visitors from Federation. Reports were read and accepted and three committee members who have stepped down were thanked for their contribution over the years. We welcomed one new member to the committee. Margaret Eastwood was re elected as President. Christine Fisher has taken over as secretary. The meeting closed with a toast to Absent Friends and Dunnington WI’s 85th year. It was so nice to see members who we had not seen since March.
Building on the success of that meeting we are to hold monthly zoom meetings, starting on Tuesday 1st December at 7pm, when we hope to have members telling us what crafts etc and new skills they have learnt during lockdowns. Visitors are welcome to join us. If you are not a WI member, email Christine Fisher so she can send out joining details.
Subs are usually due in January but in this very strange year they will be due in April 2021 instead
If you have any memories or photographs of the WI please contact Christine Fisher
