Older People's Peer Support (OPPS) – doing it for ourselves!

an online event hosted by AWOC York, 11am - 12.15pm on 1st October 20

In this time of change, a virus has unlocked a torrent of goodwill flowing over a rocky riverbed. Coronavirus has taken us by surprise but we are a resilient species and cooperation is one of our good points. Together we hope to adapt and cope in the long run with whatever life brings.

On 1st October it is International Older Person's Day. We’d like to bring together grassroots peer support groups to share why and how they began and how they operate “normally” and in “the new normal”. The focus to be on the mutual support amongst older people.

We will be hearing from social and campaigning groups, and share leisure activities and discussion groups run under their own steam by and for older people (independent of any charity, church or council organisation). Is this kind of DIY one of the basic ways to support the wellbeing of older people in the future?

Give Sue Lister (pictured) a ring on 01904 488870 to speak about your grassroots group and/or to be put on the list for an invitation to the online event. A timely discussion for us all.

Our October meeting will be a virtual meeting using Zoom.
Tuesday 6 October at 7.30 pm.

A personal view from the Reverend Stephen Griffith MBE with special reference to the plight of Sudanese refugees and religious freedom.

“Stephen worked in Jordan and Syria (and to a certain extent in Turkey, Armenia and Georgia) from 1992-2002, being Anglican Chaplain in Jordan and Syria, and the Archbishop of Canterbury's representative in Syria and Lebanon and then in Armenia and Georgia. In Jordan and Syria Stephen was part of a programme supporting Sudanese Refugees, and in Turkey, reported on the situation concerning the oppression of the Christian population in Southeast Turkey.”

If you are not on our mailing list, but would like to attend this meeting please email Anne Castle for details am.castle@btopenworld.com
