Update from Dunnington Cancer Support Group
Just wanted to give you all an update of where we are regarding the Dunnington Charity shop who raise money for York Against Cancer
The devastating news that the UK total number of deaths due to Coronavirus so far has risen sharply from since those in care homes and the community were included for the first time.
This news had come in minutes after I had been asked if I’m was looking at reopening the charity shop because other charities were beginning to put donation bags through our doors. So I wanted to let everyone know where we currently stand
As chairman of Dunnington Cancer Support group I feels that the situation of covid 19 is still very volatile and I'm so sorry but at this moment in time we must remain closed.
Everybody seems to be relaxing restrictions. B&Q are reopening, Greggs, Costa, Homebase and Burger King golf courses, Garden centres are all among those big names who’ve opened their doors again recently, so it’s not surprising people are starting to expect charity shops to be operating as normal , and there is mounting pressure on charity shops like Dunnington cancer support group to open their doors again.
But, Boris Johnson has warned us that we are, and I quote, ‘at the moment of maximum risk’.
It is my opinion that all we are going to achieve by choosing to relax our self imposed restrictions too soon is encourage this virus to stick around for even longer, which will not only cause a second wave of new deaths, but it will mean more and stronger government restrictions down the line.
So whilst the whole world may appear to be getting back to normal, I will not be opening the shop until the government deem it safe to do so.
The problem we would have due to the size of the shop only 1 person would be allowed in the shop at anyone time and we would need to be disinfecting after each customer had been in the shop and to me this is too much of a risk.
The one piece of advice that has remained unchanged throughout all of this is...

Save lives
Moving to Stay alert , control the virus and save lives.
Lets hope & pray its over soon!

Dunnington in Bloom
Today – Wednesday 20 May – it was a joy to me to hear the sound of York Street verges being mown and see the pavements and other areas being freed of weeds once more. It’s been hard for everyone to accept the necessity for not giving service to the village this Spring and having to wait until regulations were clear and matters such as insurance were satisfactorily sorted. We can only be grateful that the weather has not decided to be frustrating.
Maybe this lockdown period has awakened or reawakened your Interest in horticulture and appreciation of how lovely it is to see the village starting back towards its beautiful best? If so, do remember that ‘Bloom’ is always happy to welcome new volunteers. It’s not necessary to be experienced, as the team will always give friendly advice to anyone who seeks it.
Meanwhile, as we’re not yet able to say it in person, it’s good to have this opportunity to express a heartfelt thank you to Liz Turnbull now that her eight years of excellent service as Bloom’s secretary are just ended. We look forward to being able to say it properly, Liz, later in the year (we trust).

Dunnington Playing Fields Association and Sports Club
We hope everyone is keeping fit and well.
I have been asked by a few people how things are going. We are working hard to keep our expenditure to a minimum and have received a grant of £7300 from Sport England to support us through this difficult financial time when there is no rent incoming and some essential expenditure.
The Sports Club are working to establish a system to enable people to use the bar area and socialise. We have ideas of how it could work and the space to ensure social distancing is possible. We plan to be ready to open when given the green light.
With the support of the village I am sure we will be able to work through this so everyone can enjoy sport again in the not too distant future.
